Ambika's Yoga Philosophy

I believe the way to honor our connection to the Earth Mother is through our daily practices. To be inspired in our expression begins with our breath. In my teaching of Yoga, I pay close attention to the smoothness of the breath and its synchronization with the postures, whether in flowing asana or in a static hold.

I have been teaching yoga since I was a teen and have studied with many teachers in their various styles and received innumerable certifications over the years. I am an ERYT-500 and an RYT-500 with the Yoga Alliance and am completing work on my Master's Degree in Yoga through Hindu University of America and the Amrit Yoga Institute.

My classes are taught in a mixed style bringing in my favorite aspects of the doctrines of my teachers. The main mode is that of Amrit Yoga, “The Posture of Consciousness” as taught to me by my Guru, Yogi Amrit Desai.

It is my belief that the way to honor our connection to the Earth Mother is through our sadhana, our daily practices.

This makes reflection a potential source of frustration. As we allow ourselves to be guided through meditation, we find a way to engage in a type of contemplation that focuses our attention. Allowing ourselves to be guided gives us the opportunity to give over to the divine influence and guidance. When we are in a state of relaxed effortlessness, insights come to us that we find ease in embracing. Engaging in guided meditation brings amazing revelations.

According to her mama, Amy’s first words were a song and dance routine. Since then the rhythm of drums, dance and deep breaths have been the beat of her heart and joy of her life!

Currently she instructs beginner through advanced students in dance styles including: Salsa On1, Bachata Merengue, and Reggaeton and Classical Yoga. Her specialty is guiding students to find their inner rhythm and joyful expression.

Amy’s energy packed classes are given locally on the Treasure Coast of Florida and often take her to exotic location around the globe. She is a professional percussionist and has performed with greats including, Babatundi Olatunji, Tito Puente Jr. and her own award winning bands.
                   
Amy’s dance Team Bachata Salvaje is currently holding auditions in south Florida. While living in Arizona Amy performed as a Latin team dancer for two performing groups: Ritmo Latino and Salvaje in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Venues where Amy has performed include: Phoenix Film Festival, Scottsdale, Club Barcelona, Scottsdale, Club Tropicana, Scottsdale, Dance Time Studio, Scottsdale, Starlight Ballroom, Tempe and Fountain Hills Paragon Dance Studio and Latin Heritage Festival.

Breathing life into your day!

If you have ventured into my Yoga class then you have heard me talk in numerous ways about the importance of your breath. My philosophy is that the breath transports us through our practice of yoga as it does through our lives. It is obvious that the act of breathing is essential for living.
    The ancient ones teach us to practice our breathing and to perfect it. It is believed that we are given a stock of a set amount of breaths to use in our lifetime. By practicing the lengthening of each breath we are lengthening our lives.
    We yogis learn to control the breath, to savor the breath and to allow the breath to carry us through our Yoga practice and through our lives! There are many exercises to strengthen and relax the breath. During a Yoga practice, whether rigorous or gentle, the most used style of breathing is the Ujjayi breath. Learn how to perform this soothing and empowering breath.

Ujjayi Pranayama, The art of breathing like the waves of the ocean.
Ujjayi pranayama is the Yogic exercise of mimicking the oceanic sound or the sound of the waves. To practice Pranayama is to focus on the breath to increase energy in the body.
    Ujjayi is the primary breath of a Yoga practice. It is simple to achieve. Give it a try by sitting in a comfortable position. Begin to inhale and exhale deeply using your mouth. While doing this, constrict your throat as if something is choking it when you exhale and inhale the air. This will produce a sound similar to the ocean when you breath.
    Next, close your mouth and breathe using your nose. Maintain the same tone within your throat, so that your breath continues to make the same sound as you did when your mouth was open.
    Ujjayi means "victory" in Sanskrit. This is the breath of being victorious! The practice of Ujjayi warms the breath as it enters the lungs, helping to build heat in the body so that stretching is safer and the inner organs can be cleansed of any toxins that have accumulated. Through this heat, the internal agni or ‘fire' is stoked, and a powerful healing process is unlocked.
    In the beginning try to practice the breath for three to five minutes. Over time increase to the length of your Yoga practice.
